S Africa’s mining industry, unions, govt to sign pact to save jobs

South Africa’s mining industry, unions and the minerals department will sign a declaration next Monday outlining measures to save jobs in the struggling sector, the mining minister’s advisor said on Tuesday.
“On Monday there will be a meeting to sign off the mining industry’s commitment to save jobs and ameliorate the impact of job losses,” Mahlodi Muofhe told Reuters.
The mining industry, which contributes around 7% to Africa’s most developed economy, is struggling with sinking commodity prices, rising costs and labour unrest. South Africa’s mining ministry held talks with companies and unions over planned job cuts earlier this month.
